{"id":18958,"date":"2015-06-25T16:54:07","date_gmt":"2015-06-25T14:54:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/infnimport.sitebysite.it\/2015\/06\/25\/erc-1-8-milioni-di-euro-al-progetto-ultra-fast-silicon-detector-di-nicolo-cartiglia-2\/"},"modified":"2025-01-13T09:05:58","modified_gmt":"2025-01-13T08:05:58","slug":"erc-1-8-milioni-di-euro-al-progetto-ultra-fast-silicon-detector-di-nicolo-cartiglia-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/infn.sitebysite.it\/en\/erc-1-8-milioni-di-euro-al-progetto-ultra-fast-silicon-detector-di-nicolo-cartiglia-2\/","title":{"rendered":"ULTRA FAST DETECTORS FOR PHOTOGRAPHING PARTICLES IN 4D"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\" alignleft size-full wp-image-1846\" src=\"https:\/\/infnimport.sitebysite.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/cartiglia.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"250\" style=\"margin: 0px 10px; float: left;\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Develop a new ultra fast detector based on silicon and capable of providing a four-dimensional image of the<br \/>\nparticles that pass through it, simultaneously &#8220;photographing&#8221; both the position and time of transit of the<br \/>\nparticles: this is the core of the Ultra-Fast Silicon Detector (UFSD) project proposed by Nicolo Cartiglia of the<br \/>\nINFN Turin section and winner of an ERC Advanced Grant of 1.8 million euros lasting five years.<br \/>\nThe project is based on the development of a new type of silicon detector, similar to those used in many<br \/>\nparticle physics experiments, but which is characterised by the ability to determine the time of transit of a<br \/>\nparticle in an extremely precise manner, with a resolution of approximately 10 picoseconds. That is: a detector<br \/>\ncapable of an accuracy of 10 thousandths of a billionth of a second and equal, in the spatial dimensions, to<br \/>\nthat of a very thin hair.<br \/>\nThe possibility of adding the time dimension to the tracking process is critical to properly associate<br \/>\nthe particles that belong to the same event, discarding instead those that transited in the detector at<br \/>\nsubsequent times. This new type of technology can be applied in contexts in which the detector must be<br \/>\nvery thin or very resistant to radiation, such as for example in oncological hadrontherapy in which very high<br \/>\nprecision technologies are developed to be used in dosimetry.<br \/>\nThe activity that led to proposing the Ultra-Fast Silicon Detector project began in 2013 as part of the research<br \/>\nof the Fifth National Commission INFN, which deals with technological and interdisciplinary research, and<br \/>\nthanks to the collaboration between the Turin INFN division, Trento and Florence INFN groups and the Bruno<br \/>\nKessler Foundation (FBK). The Turin INFN division, which coordinate the project, will take care of the design,<br \/>\ndrawing and testing of the sensors, and will be also involved in the development of a simulator of silicon<br \/>\ndetectors (Weightfield2 project).<br \/>\nIn 2014, UFSD was recognised as an &#8220;Italy-USA project of great scientific importance&#8221; and received a grant<br \/>\nfor a period of two years from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
